    How US sales tax differs

    There is no federal sales tax. States set their own, many allow cities and counties to add more, and what is taxable varies: some states tax services, many do not. A few states, such as Oregon and Delaware, have no statewide sales tax.

    Base rate vs combined rate

    The rate suggested here is the statewide base rate only. Your actual combined rate depends on the destination or origin address and can be several points higher. Overwrite the rate with the combined rate that applies to the sale.

    Exemptions and nexus

    Resale and exemption certificates can remove tax from a sale. Whether you must collect tax in a state depends on nexus rules. This tool does not decide that; confirm with the state revenue department or a tax professional.
