GST, HST, PST and QST

Canada has a federal 5% GST. Ontario and the Atlantic provinces charge a single harmonised HST (13–15%). British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba add a separate provincial tax, and Quebec adds QST. The right combination depends on the place of supply.

What an invoice should show

Suppliers registered for GST/HST normally show their registration number, the invoice date, a description of the supply, the total, and the tax charged. Requirements differ depending on the invoice total.

Check before relying

Rates and rules change, and small suppliers may not need to register. This tool applies the rates it knows and does not verify compliance; confirm with the Canada Revenue Agency or Revenu Québec.
