    What a rent receipt should show

    A rent receipt records who paid, who received, the property, the rent period, the amount and the mode of payment. It should be dated and signed by the landlord. Keep one for every month.

    Rent receipts and HRA

    Employees claiming House Rent Allowance exemption in India are usually asked for rent receipts, and for the landlord's PAN when annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000. Requirements are set by your employer and the tax rules, so confirm what yours accepts.

    Cash rent and proof

    Where rent is paid by bank transfer, the bank record is stronger proof than a receipt alone. Where it is paid in cash, a signed receipt matters even more. Keep both.
